Innovation from the Nordics

Innovation is one of the pillars Aprikos is built on

The Nordic healthcare systems are among the most advanced in the world — and some of the best ideas in surgery are born at the operating table. We take them to the world.

Our role

From the operating table to the world

The best ideas in surgery come from the clinicians who live the problems every day — yet too many of those ideas never leave the hospital.

That is where Aprikos Medical comes in. As a Norwegian manufacturer with a certified quality system and a growing global distributor network, we take Nordic clinical innovation from idea to certified product — engineering, MDR certification and worldwide distribution under one roof.

Why the Nordics?

  • World-class university hospitals — strong clinical research environments and high procedure standards.
  • Ideas born in the theatre — innovation driven by the surgeons and nurses who use the tools daily.
  • A tradition of practical engineering — simple, robust solutions to real clinical problems.
  • Trusted regulatory ground — products developed and released under Norwegian quality management.
Our first innovation project

Noval Suction — developed with surgeons at Akershus University Hospital

Our first innovation project takes on one of surgery’s oldest everyday problems: blood obscuring the surgical field. The Noval Suction tip was invented by surgeons at Akershus University Hospital, and Aprikos Medical holds the exclusive licence to the patented technology. We have taken it from concept to working prototypes — engineered in Norway, now in live testing, and headed for global launch through our distributor network.

The problem — and the answer

The clinical challenge today — and what Noval solves

Every surgeon knows the first half of this table. The second half is why the tip exists.

!

In the theatre today

  • Blood obscures the field — the surgeon operates on what they can see, and bleeding takes that away.
  • Time is lost waiting on suction — standard tips clear the field slower than the team needs.
  • Tips clog and stall mid-procedure — interruptions at exactly the wrong moment.
  • Poor visibility raises complication risk — and lengthens time under anaesthesia.
  • The tool hasn’t changed in decades — suction is treated as a commodity, not a design problem.

What Noval Suction solves

  • Up to 32% faster blood removal in testing — the field clears while the surgeon keeps working.
  • Visibility restored sooner — less waiting, more operating.
  • Designed against clogging — engineered by surgeons who lived the interruptions.
  • Same handling as today’s tips — no new technique, no training barrier.
  • Patented and exclusive — developed at Akershus University Hospital, licensed exclusively to Aprikos Medical.

Where the evidence stands

User testing from September 2026 and a veterinary trial at Fredrikstad Dyrehospital — Norway’s largest animal hospital — in 2H 2026. Expected MDR approval Q4 2027 opens the human market, with global roll-out through our distributor network in 2028.

Project update

Next step — evaluation in veterinary surgery

Following initial presentations of the Noval Suction Tip and its ex-situ and in-vitro results, the next step is evaluation during relevant veterinary surgical procedures.

Fredrikstad Dyrehospital and experienced veterinary surgeon Elena Regine Moldal have agreed to evaluate the product, providing valuable feedback ahead of a potential veterinary market launch.
